開村から２シーズン目を迎えた鳥取環境大学の英語村が好評だ。「日本語使用禁止」の独自ルールが、外国にいるような感覚で英語を学べるとして、多くの学生が利用。学外から通い詰める熱心なファンも増えてきた。
　英語村は昨年４月、大学の公立化と同時に学生センター内に整備。地域貢献の観点から学内の学生だけでなく、学外にも広く開放された。開村時間は月曜～金曜までの正午～午後５時。環境大によると、利用者は初年度が延べ６０７８人。本年度は７月末現在で４９１５人が訪れ、学生を中心に初年度の約１・６倍のペースで利用者が伸びている。
　「いろんな国の人に出会えて楽しい」。鳥取市吉成の自営業の方は開村当初からの常連だ。海外旅行や英語に興味があり「鳥取県では外国人と知り合う機会が少ないから」と明かす。
　現在、英語村にはフランスやフィリピン、オーストラリア、マレーシアなど計10カ国のネーティブスピーカーのスタッフが日替わりで常駐している。
　自営業の方は、エジプトとフランス出身の男性スタッフと意気投合。互いに食事に招き合うなどプライベートでも親交を持つようになった。「引っ込み思案だったが、英語なら言いたいことが言えた」と声を弾ませる。
大学で英語を学ぶ学生ですら、「初めは何も話せず黙っている学生がいる」（学務課）ほど、最初の一歩を踏み出すには勇気が必要だ。自営業の方は「友達に会いに行く感覚なら大丈夫」と指摘する。
　こんな英語村が近くにあっていいですね。全国の公立短大や大学に英語村が併設されることを期待したいですね。ともかく英語を話す環境をたくさん作って欲しいですね。
