山口大は２７日、２０１５年度に新たな学部を設置するなどの大学改革構想を発表した。新学部は、高い英語力や科学技術の知識を習得する「国際総合科学部」（仮称）で、来年末にも設置の可否が決まる見通し。大学院の研究科統合も掲げ、「理系に強い国際的な人材」を育成して他大学との差別化を目指すという。
　「とくに科学技術が関与した諸問題に対して複眼的、総合的に理解し、解決できる人材を育てたい」。記者会見した丸本学長は新設を目指す国際総合科学部の狙いを説明した。
　国際教養大（秋田市）、国際基督教大（東京）など国際的な人材育成を掲げて実績を上げている全国の国公私立大や学部に対抗できるような「国際学部」を目指す。
　新学部では、学生が県内外の企業に出向き、様々な社会問題の解決を目指して企画立案などを行う「課題解決型学習」を導入。１年生の夏に海外で語学研修を行うほか、２年秋～３年夏にアジアや欧米の提携大学への留学をカリキュラムに組み込む。講義の一部は英語で実施。卒業時には、ビジネスで必要な英語力を測る「ＴＯＥＩＣ」で７３０点以上の力を身につける。
　新学部の定員は１学年１００人で、人文社会系の学部の定員を削減して割り当てる。医学部、共同獣医学部の定員は減らさない。高校で文系、理系のいずれを選択しても受験できる入試科目にするという。
　大学院では、１５年度をめどに、理工学系、医学系、農学系の３研究科を一つの研究科に統合する。「専門が細分化され周辺領域への知識が不十分」との指摘があるため、各領域を横断した幅広い研究を促す狙いがある。
　大学もグローバル化や生き残りをかけてたいへんですね。留学も中途半端でなく１～2年のスパンで徹底的にやってほしいですね。
