2020年のオリンピック・パラリンピック開催地として東京が選出されたことにより、訪日外国人旅行者の増加が予想されている。招致の決め手となったキーワードの1つ「おもてなし」が話題を集めているが、慨して「英語が苦手」とされる日本人1人1人の受け入れ態勢はどのような状況なのだろうか。
オンライン英会話レッスン「hanaso」を展開するアンフープは、「訪日外国人旅行者への英語対応に関する調査」を実施し、その結果を公表した。それによると、英語力に「自信がある」人は2割程度に留まる一方、訪日外国人旅行者の増加に対しては9割以上が「良いこと」と回答していることなどが明らかとなった。
同調査は、20代から50代までの男女で、訪日外国人旅行者から英語で話しかけられた経験を持つ437名を対象に実施。調査期間は2013年8月29日～30日、調査方法はインターネットによる。
まず、自分自身の英語力にどの程度自信があるかを4段階評価で聞いたところ、「とても自信がある」は全体の3.9％、「まあまあ自信がある」は16.2％となり、両方を合計した「自信がある」人の率は全体の20.1％となった。英語力の必要性が盛んに指摘される一方で、日本人の大半は自信をもてない状況が続いているようだ。なお、この数値を男女別に比較してみると、男性は22.7％、女性は17.5％となり、男性の方が「自信がある」傾向があることがわかる。
