東京大の研究チームは２０日、１リットルに換算するとわずか２グラムという、世界でもっとも軽い液体を発見したと発表した。
　ヘリウムの一種である「ヘリウム３」が特殊な条件下で液体になったもので、これまで世界でもっとも軽いと考えられてきた液体水素の３０分の１の軽さだという。
　気体状の物質は一般的に、温度を下げると液体になり、さらに下げると氷のような固体へと変化する。しかし、通常のヘリウムよりも軽いヘリウム３はこれまで、原子１個分の厚みしかない平面状の層の中に閉じこめると絶対零度（氷点下約２７３度）まで冷やしても気体のままだと考えられてきた。今回、研究チームが実際に、平面に閉じこめて温度を下げたところ、絶対零度近くで、密度が非常に低く、軽い液体に変わったのを確認したという。僅か2gとは、考えられない程、低い密度なんでしょうね。
