東京大の経塚准教授（植物遺伝学）らの研究チームは２５日までに、稲穂の枝分かれを促し、できるコメの量を増やす遺伝子を発見したと、米科学アカデミー紀要に発表した。豊作を連想させる「ＴＡＷＡＷＡ１」との名前を付けた。
　この遺伝子の働きが強まる変異の起きたイネをコシヒカリと掛け合わせると、１本当たりの収量が最大で４割増え、味もコシヒカリと変わらないイネができた。ただ、１粒当たりの重さは数％軽くなっており、最適な品種作りや育て方は今後さらに検討する必要があるという。
　コメの量は稲穂の枝分かれの数に応じて増減する。それぞれの枝に花がつき、一つ一つがコメになる。上手く活用して粒も大きく、かつ収量も上がるような品種を開発してほしいですね。
