3D映画を見る自宅用の市販ディスプレーを活用。木原教授が考案したおなかに開けた2~4センチの一つの穴から、内視鏡や手術器具を差し入れて行う「ミニマム創内視鏡下手術」に組み入れた。従来の映像ではわからなかった「深さ」が立体的に見えることで、体の深い場所にある血管や組織の手術もより安全で確実に行えるようになった。
執刀医や助手、内視鏡を操作する医師がそれぞれディスプレーを装着して、映像を見ながら手術を行う。一つの大きなモニターの映像を見ながら行う通常の内視鏡手術と違い、顔を向け続ける必要がない。ディスプレーの下側は広く空いており、手元や手術台の患者の様子を確認できる。手術がより安全に、そして確実に行えそうですね。
