 一方で、「自分自身が英語を使うイメージがあるか」と尋ねたところ、中学生の44%、高校生の46%が「英語を使うことはほとんどない」と回答。「日本の大部分の子供たちは教室の外に出れば、英語を使う環境にないのが現状。
 さらに学校での授業内容についても、中高の約8~9割が「英文を日本語に訳す」「単語の意味や英文の仕組みについて先生の説明を聞く」と回答するなど、受け身的だ。一方で、授業で自分の考えなどを英語で話す機会は中学2年の55%をピークに、学年が上がるごとに低下。高校3年の時点で26%にとどまっている。
だが、教育界の英語教育熱は高まる一方だ。文科省が進める改革では、「読む」「書く」「聞く」「話す」-の4技能をバランス良く盛り込んだ実用的な学習環境づくりが喫緊の課題とされ、議論が進んでいる。
 文科省の願っている教育環境と現実の教育環境や教育内容が、あまりにもかけ離れている状況ですね。日常的に英語を喋る環境がほとんどない日本では道具というよりは学ぶものになってしまっている感じですね。根本的な部分を見直さなければ結局、喋れない国民を増やしていくだけにもなりかねませんね。一律に教えるのではなく自分で習得していくほうがいいのではないかと思いますね。それにしても「英語」への高まりは異常ですね。もっと学ぶべき内容がたくさんあるように感じてなりません。
