　冷凍動物園は、生き物の生殖細胞を採取し、凍結して保存したり、解凍後に人工授精させたりする仕組み。ＪＡＺＡは現在、神戸市と横浜市の２か所に、生殖細胞を保存する液体窒素のタンクを設置している。地理的な条件を考慮し、３か所目として仙台市を選んだ。アフリカゾウの人工授精など、高い繁殖技術を持つ八木山動物公園内にタンクを設ける。
