　同賞は「工学のノーベル賞」と呼ばれる。中村氏は授賞式で「人類への貢献度と独創性を重んじる賞をいただき、ある意味、基礎研究重視のノーベル物理学賞よりもうれしい」と語った。赤崎勇・名城大教授も受賞したが、授賞式は欠席した。
　今年は中村、赤崎両氏のほか、１９６２年に世界で初めて赤色ＬＥＤを作ったニック・ホロニアック米イリノイ大名誉教授と、その共同研究者２人が選ばれた。ともかくおめでとうございます。
