公立としては全国初の全寮制男子校の鹿児島県立楠隼中学・高校が１１日、大隅半島の同県肝付きもつき町に開校した。
　「宇宙学」を売りにした中高一貫校で、中学１年生６０人、高校１年生３７人（募集定員は各６０人）が入学した。地域の過疎化が進む中、全国から生徒を募集し、県外からは計３７人が集まった。
　同町内にはロケットの打ち上げ施設があることから、宇宙航空研究開発機構（ＪＡＸＡ）から講師を招くなど連携した授業を実施するほか、農家での民泊体験など、地域の特色を生かしたカリキュラムを予定。中学生は半数近くの２８人、高校生は９人が県外の生徒となった。
　開校式で、山崎校長は「開拓心を持ち、勉学に励んでほしい」と激励。東京都出身で、中学生代表として抱負を述べた男子は「宇宙飛行士を目指して、仲間と切磋琢磨せっさたくましたい」と誓った。一過性に終わることなく継続して将来の宇宙開発を担う人材が育っていくことを期待します。
