　同賞は気鋭の若手物理学者に与えられ、今回は３回目で、日本人の受賞は初めて。高柳、笠両氏のほかアルゼンチンの研究者２人が受賞し、賞金１０万ドル（約１１５０万円）を分け合う。
　授賞理由は「場の量子論と量子重力におけるエントロピーの基礎的な概念」。宇宙のブラックホールで起きている現象などを、重力理論で説明する試みが評価された。
　同財団は１３年に設立され、生命科学、基礎物理学、数学の３部門で画期的な成果を上げた研究者に贈る「ブレイクスルー賞」と、若手物理学者を奨励する「ニューホライズンズ物理学賞」を創設。第１回の生命科学のブレイクスルー賞は、京都大の山中伸弥教授が選ばれ、賞金３００万ドルを受け取った。若手の研究者がどんどん育っていくことを期待したいですね。
