欧州宇宙機関（ＥＳＡ）は１２日、火星と木星の間にあるチュリュモフ・ゲラシメンコ彗星に１０年かけて接近した無人探査機「ロゼッタ」から着陸機を分離し、彗星に向けて放出した。約７時間かけ降下し、世界初の彗星着陸に成功した。
　着陸後にドリルで深さ２０センチほどの穴を掘り、内部の組成を調べる計画。氷が主成分の彗星は、誕生したばかりの地球に衝突して水をもたらしたとする説があり、着陸調査は地球の水の起源に迫ると期待されている。
　着陸機は縦、横、高さが約１メートルの箱形で名称は「フィラエ」。地球の水の起源が明らかにされることを期待します。
