アフリカ東部のエチオピアで約２８０万年前とみられる最古の原人化石を見つけたと、米アリゾナ州立大などの国際研究チームが５日、米科学誌サイエンスに発表した。
　原人の誕生時期を４０万～５０万年遡らせる発見で、猿人から原人への進化の空白を埋める化石として注目されるという。
　見つかった化石は、５本の歯が残る下顎の骨の一部。臼歯が小型化するなど原人らしい面が認められる一方、顎には原始的な特徴があり、原人の前の進化段階である猿人らしさも併せ持つ。これまで知られていた最古の原人は、２３０万～２４０万年前のホモ・ハビリスと呼ばれる種類だった。研究チームは「研究を進め、今回の化石の種を特定したい」と説明している。
