　約２００席の講堂に、立ち見が出るほど大勢の学生らが詰めかけ、大きな拍手で天野さんを出迎えた。天野さんは、胸に付けた青色発光ダイオード（ＬＥＤ）のプレートを光らせながら、ＬＥＤの将来展望などを説明。学生に「成功のイメージを持ち、未来を想像することが大切だ」と話した。講演後、同大から記念の賞状とメダルが授与された。
　同大に留学して機械工学を研究している男子学生は「天野さんの講演を聞いて、ものづくりで社会に貢献したいという意識が改めて強くなった」と刺激を受けた様子だった。
　天野さんは１５日まで現地で講演などを行い、日本時間の１６日に帰国する。未来につながる多くの若手研究者が輩出していくことを期待したいですね。
