三菱重工業と宇宙航空研究開発機構(JAXA)は22日、カナダの通信放送衛星を搭載したH2Aロケット29号機を24日午後3時23分、種子島宇宙センター(鹿児島県)から打ち上げると発表した。国産ロケットが商業衛星を打ち上げるのは初めてで、長時間飛行できる改良型のH2Aを使う。後れを取っている商業打ち上げ市場での巻き返しに向け正念場となる。
これまでのH2Aは打ち上げの約30分後に静止衛星を分離し、衛星が自力で高度3万6千キロの静止軌道に到達していた。これに対し改良型は2段エンジンの噴射を3回に増やして約4時間半飛行。衛星は静止軌道の近くまで運ばれ、燃料消費を抑えて軌道に入ることができ、運用期間が数年延びる利点がある。
