３月１４日の中間報告の段階で、理研は「科学的検証は第三者に委ねる」としていた。が、今回の最終報告に合わせて野依良治理事長は「まず理研の研究者がＳＴＡＰ現象の厳密な検証を試みるとともに、第三者による再現実験に積極的に協力する」と言明した。
当然の方針転換である。検証には１年程度を要する見込みだが、途中経過も含めて客観性と透明性を世界に示すことが大事だ。
２つ目は「組織の信頼」を回復するための再発防止の取り組みである。
最終報告では、論文の執筆と研究の核心部分の実験に深く関わったベテラン研究者について、「データの正当性と正確性などについて自ら確認することなく論文投稿に至った。過失とはいえ、責任は重大である」とした。
過失というには結果があまりに深刻であるため、見過ごしたのではなく、目をつぶって不正に加担したのではないか、という意地の悪い見方もできなくはない。
野依氏が掲げる「若手研究者が最大限に能力を発揮できる環境整備」のためにも指導的立場にある者の責任は重い。「１人の未熟な研究者」だけでは、これほど大きな問題にならなかったはずだ。
最終報告に対し、小保方氏は近日中に不服申し立てをする意向を表明している。自らの責任についての科学者らしい弁明と説明を聞きたい。
